When you wake up in the morning it is supposed to be with a spring in your step and energy to face the day ahead. You are not supposed to wake up rubbing your neck to ease the stiffness and pain. The sad reality is that far too many people wake up with a literal pain in your neck. Neck pain is caused by a range of different things but one of the most common causes is sleeping on the wrong pillow or mattress. A memory foam pillow, check out Elite Rest’s Contour Pillow, can help you to sleep comfortably. It sounds like a simple solution but often it is the smallest things that can make the biggest difference.

Why you need to consider your sleeping position

The position you sleep in could be affecting the quality of sleep you are getting, especially if your pillow does not match your sleeping position. When you sleep it is important that you keep your neck in a neutral position, a good pillow will ensure that this happens and in doing so reducing neck and shoulder pain.

Side sleepers: For your neck to be in a neutral position as a side sleeper your ears and shoulders need to be in line. This is why a thicker pillow works the best if you prefer sleeping on your side.

Back sleepers: Look for a pillow of medium thickness, it is important to make sure your pillow does not push your head and neck too far forward. If this happens you will wake up with neck pain.

Stomach sleepers: If you sleep on your stomach, you need a thin pillow (or even no pillow). A thin pillow allows your neck to remain in a neutral position without being pushed too far forward.

Relieve Your Neck Pain At Home

There are a few home remedies you can try to ease your neck pain.

Rest and Relax. Good, old fashioned R&R is often all you need to help ease your aching neck. If you know what caused the neck pain, avoid that activity as much as possible, at least for a few days while your body heals.

Cold/Hot Therapy. Applying ice to the affected area will help to reduce inflammation while applying heat will encourage blood flow to the painful area and this will aid healing.

Stretch. Stretching is always advisable. A few neck stretches in the morning or before you go to bed can help to relieve neck pain.
