High-Quality Pillows, Comfortable Sleeping Hairstyles, and Other Tips to Avoid Tangled Hair

When your hair gets to a certain length, sleeping with long hair starts to become annoying. You either wake up from your hair tickling your face or in intense pain from you or your partner putting weight on your hair and pulling on it. Not to mention all the tangles and knots that you have to deal with after a restless night. But long hair doesn’t have to affect your sleep. To avoid all of these problems, you just need to learn a few tips on how to sleep with long hair.

Chose a High-Quality Pillow

If you have long hair, then you are fully aware of how important it is to sleep on a high-quality pillow. Different materials and textures can affect your hair and make it frizzy or messy. A pillow that is not comfortable enough can cause restless sleep, which in turn, can result in tangles and knots.

So, to avoid spending a lot of time fixing your hair in the morning, you should choose a comfortable pillow that will not damage your hair. If you are a back or a stomach sleeper, you can try this ultra-thin memory foam pillow. To avoid frizzy hair, opt for a pillow with a 100% organic cotton cover or a silk cover. Pillows made of natural goose feathers are also recommended if you want to avoid restless sleep.

Try Putting Your Hair in a Bun

If you want to avoid the pain in the neck that sleeping with long hair can be, you might consider putting your hair in a bun at night. You just need to be careful that you do not strap it too tightly.

A great way to diminish the risk of split ends and hold the hair gently is to use a scrunchie instead of a thin elastic hair tie. In addition, you are an ideal candidate for simple sock bun curls if you usually go to bed with your hair wet.

A sock bun essentially consists of rolling damp hair up into a sock bun, sleeping on it, then finger-combing it out in the morning to get beautiful curls. They are comfortable to sleep in, keep your hair out of the way while you sleep, and give you soft, natural curls that last all day.

Think Outside of the Hair Bun

If a bun is not your bag, braids are an excellent choice. However, I do not recommend braiding wet hair before bed if you are concerned about split ends. If your hair is dry, though, you should be fine. Let the braid be pretty loose, like the bun.

Since they create more surface area getting roughed up in your sleep, I would recommend steering clear of French braids.

A braid is a smart solution because it can easily end up wherever you need it. For instance, you can braid your hair into pigtails over each shoulder or front to back all the way over your shoulder. And, either way, they are out of your way completely.

Leave plenty of unbraided hair at the bottom when you try to secure them. This will ensure you do not put extra stress right on your ends with the ties. Also, always choose bands that do not have metal fasteners on them.

Cover Your Long Hair up

Both men and women with long hair have found that covering up their hair during the night will keep them comfortable and maintain the hair’s beauty. This is especially true if you have long dreadlocks.

I would recommend using a big knit hat or scarf. This will reduce the chance of waking up with messy hair as well. Of course, this solution may not work well for those of you who do not feel comfortable having your head covered at night.

When considering the best way to sleep with long hair, you need to also look at your pillowcases. High thread count pillowcases are less likely to let hair irritants through since they are more tightly woven. Your hair can get caught on feathers. Satin probably is your best option when it comes to pillowcases.

Other Solutions You Might Consider

If you have medium length to long hair, you might be able to get away with sleeping with a low ponytail. This is generally comfortable and keeps your hair less tangled and out of the way. It is easier than a braid but not as effective. Also, remember to use a scrunchie instead of elastic bands.

The pineapple, or high ponytail, is another alternative. This is perfect for hair with a wave or curl and for anyone wanting volume at the roots. Curls are not squashed by this option. The only problem is that your roots may ache after the first night.

One variation of the pineapple is to use a big grip to loosely clip your hair on the top of your head. This keeps it out of the way, and you avoid binding it. Plus, you can style it easily in the morning.

As you evaluate how to sleep with long hair, these tips will make certain that you get a good night’s sleep and look great when you get up in the morning. Sweet dreams!
